Jackson Hole

A field guide to one week in the Tetons: four mountain days, one rodeo, and an anniversary at 6,300 feet.

The trip at a glance

Ten years, six days, one valley

Home base is Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa in Teton Village, at the foot of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The tram, the gondola, the spa, and three of our five dinners are all within a five-minute walk of the room. No rental car, and no need for one.

The week

Weather · showing typical early-August conditions for now; the live forecast fills in automatically as the trip comes into range.

Before the bags close

Whitewater rafting Required

Thursday. The outfitter turns you away without the right feet.

  • Shoes that strap to your feet — secured sport sandals or water shoes. No flip-flops or loose slides.
  • Swimsuit worn under your clothes; a quick-dry layer
  • Splash jackets and wetsuits are provided as needed

Horseback riding Required

Wednesday morning. The ranch checks before you mount up.

  • Long pants — jeans or riding pants, no shorts
  • Closed-toe shoes with a small heel; boots are ideal
  • A warm layer for the early ride out

Layers & sun

  • Warm layer or light jacket — 25° cooler atop the tram, and the rodeo stands chill fast after sunset (~8:35)
  • Trail shoes for Monday's hike
  • Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses — high-altitude sun is fierce
  • Refillable bottle; hydrate hard the first two days at 6,300+ ft
  • A light rain shell for the routine afternoon thunderstorms

The pack-it list

The valley

Every pin of the week

"Jackson Hole" is the whole valley; "Jackson" is the town. We sleep in Teton Village, 12 miles northwest of town. Every place on this trip is pinned below: tap a pin or a row, then "Open in Google Maps" hands it to your phone for directions.

Terrain shows the mountains, satellite shows what it actually looks like. Zoom in and every pin picks up its name.

These are the same places saved to our shared "Jackson" list in Google Maps. Tiles need a signal; the pins, names, and links work either way.

No car, no problem

Getting around

The playbook

  • On foot: everything in Teton Village, including the tram, gondola, spa, and three dinners
  • START bus: $3 to town, great in daylight, useless at night (see below)
  • Taxi: the fallback for everything. About 20 minutes' notice, and the concierge says don't rely on Uber out here
  • Pre-booked rides: airport both ways, Wednesday's horse-ranch morning, and Thursday's raft check-in, all confirmed through the concierge

Taxi numbers

No Uber worth trusting, so these are the numbers that get us home. Tap to call.

The START bus, honestly

  • $3 each way, Teton Village to town, summer schedule runs May 16 to Oct 11
  • Service window is roughly 5:15 AM to 8:56 PM, and the last bus out of Teton Village leaves at 8:14 PM
  • The local route (TVL) takes about 43 minutes; the express (TVX) makes far fewer stops
  • So: fine for a daytime run into town, no help getting home after dinner. Wednesday night is a taxi, full stop
  • Live times: download the Transit app before we fly. Questions: 307-733-4521

One quirk to know

The Moose-Wilson Road, the short way from the village into the park, is under construction with a pilot-car escort this summer. Cars can queue through; bikes shouldn't. That is why Tuesday goes around by taxi to Moose instead of pedaling from the front door.

On the ground

The stuff you need at the worst moment

Everything here works without a signal. Which matters, because for a good chunk of this week we won't have one.

Where the phones stop working

  • Teton Village: fine
  • Town of Jackson: fine
  • Grand Teton, Moose to Jenny Lake: patchy to nothing. Expect nothing on Tuesday's ride
  • Snake River canyon: nothing at all Thursday morning
  • Top of the tram: surprisingly decent

Nobody's phone is broken. Plan to be out of touch Tuesday midday and Thursday morning.

Cash and tipping

  • $86 cash for the Mill Iron wranglers Wednesday. They prefer cash and this is the one that stings if we forget
  • Raft guide Thursday: plan on $40 to $60 for the two of us, cash
  • Spa: the Wednesday couples treatment does not include service, so bring something for the therapists
  • Get cash at the airport or in town on Sunday. Teton Village ATMs are thin and expensive

Altitude, for the first two days

Duxbury is at sea level. Teton Village is 6,300 feet and Monday morning we're standing at 10,450. That gap is why people feel flat on day two.

  • Drink more water than feels necessary, starting on the plane
  • Go easy on the wine Sunday and Monday
  • Monday's hike will feel harder than the mileage suggests. That's normal, not fitness

If something goes wrong

  • Emergency: 911
  • St. John's Health, hospital and ER, 625 E Broadway, Jackson · 307-733-3636
  • St. John's Urgent Care, Smith's Plaza, 1415 S Hwy 89 · 307-739-8999
  • Clinic in Teton Village, Cody House, 3345 Cody Ln, a two-minute walk · 307-739-7346
  • Pharmacy: Smith's Food & Drug, same plaza as urgent care
  • Lodge front desk, day or night: 307-201-6066

Light

Sun and golden hour

Sunset comes late out here, which is why a 6:30 dinner still has real evening after it. Golden hour is the last 40 minutes before the sun goes.

What that buys us

  • Monday: Piste at 6:30, then the Tetons go gold around 8:00 while we're still at 9,095 feet
  • Wednesday: the rodeo runs 8 to 10, so the second half is under lights in full dark
  • Tuesday: bikes are legal on the park pathway dawn to dusk, so there's no chance of running out of daylight

Dinner backups

Thursday is deliberately unbooked and Sunday is a walk-in. If either goes sideways, call one of these instead of standing in a lobby googling.

In Teton Village, walkable

  • Spur, downstairs in our own hotel · 307-732-6932
  • Teton Thai, a village favorite · 307-733-0022
  • Alpenhof, old-school Bavarian · 307-733-3242

  • The Handle Bar at the Four Seasons, casual, no reservation needed
  • Mangy Moose, always room somewhere

The front desk will book any of these for us: 307-201-6066

Thursday, the loose night

Rafting ends at noon and the afternoon runs long in two directions, so dinner is deliberately a wing-it. Easiest good version: Spur, because it's an elevator ride away and we'll be tired.

Ten years

Where the photographs are

The valley's classic spots, and which ones are near where we already are.

Near Tuesday's ride

  • Schwabacher Landing: the reflection shot. Beaver ponds with the whole range doubled in the water. Best early, dead calm
  • Mormon Row: the Moulton barns with the Tetons behind. The single most photographed spot in Wyoming, and worth it
  • Snake River Overlook: the Ansel Adams frame
  • Jenny Lake shoreline: right where we turn around anyway
  • Oxbow Bend: Mount Moran over still water, north of Moose

Without going anywhere

  • Top of the tram, Monday: the whole valley, plus the Corbet's Cabin sign
  • Bridger Gondola deck at 8:00 PM Monday: golden hour at 9,095 feet, right after dinner at Piste
  • Town Square antler arches: Wednesday, before dinner. Obligatory, and better than it sounds
  • The rodeo: ask someone to take one of the two of us at the rail before the show starts

Two lists

Before we fly, and before we leave

Do this before Sunday

  • Rodeo tickets into Apple Wallet. They're Ticketmaster mobile, the confirmation email is not valid for entry, and the fairgrounds have bad service. Do it at home
  • Download Jackson Hole for offline in Google Maps. Covers the whole valley including the park. This is the single best five minutes of prep
  • Download the Transit app for live START times
  • Add this guide to the home screen so it caches
  • Sign the Mill Iron waivers in the Peek portal

Friday, 5:15 AM sweep

Pickup is at 5:15 for a 7:30 flight and nobody thinks clearly at that hour. Pack Thursday night, then check:

  • Bathroom counter and the shower
  • Room safe
  • Chargers, by the bed and behind the desk
  • Closet, including the top shelf
  • Balcony, anything left out to dry
  • Fridge

Coffee that early is room-brewed. Nothing in the village is open, so don't count on a stop.

Day one · Sunday, August 2

Fly west, land in the mountains

The descent into Jackson is one of the best approaches in American aviation: the runway sits inside the national park, and the Tetons fill the window on the left side of the plane. Sit on the left.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

Good to know

  • Lodge pools and hot tubs are open if we want a soak after the flight
  • Start drinking water on the plane; the village sits at 6,300 ft

Tonight's only job

Nothing is scheduled. Arrive, eat something good, sleep with the window cracked.

Day two · Monday, August 3

Big Red to the top of the Tetons

The aerial tram climbs 4,139 feet in twelve minutes and sets us down at 10,450 feet on Rendezvous Mountain. We earn nothing and get everything: waffles at the summit, a ridgeline walk, and the whole valley at our feet.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

The details

  • Tram runs daily 9 to 5 all summer
  • Piste is reservation-only; ours is held
  • Bring layers: it can be 25 degrees cooler up top

How the morning ran

The plan had waffles first and the easy Top of the World loop after. It went the other way: the strenuous Rock Springs side first on fresh legs, the waffle as the reward at the top, then the Cirque Trail down. Better order, and the weather held for all of it.

The hike: Rock Springs bowl, waffles, then the Cirque Trail down

The tram does the 4,139 feet of climbing, and then you give some of it back on purpose. Off the summit down into the Rock Springs bowl, back up the ridge to Corbet's Cabin for the waffle, then down the Cirque Trail to the gondola. 3.97 miles, 1,096 feet up and 1,657 feet down, 9:31 AM to 1:43 PM.

first GPS fix, 9:31 AM low point 9,741 ft · 10:21 AM RENDEZVOUS SUMMIT · TRAM 10,456 ft · start, waffles 11:06 to 12:31 BRIDGER GONDOLA 9,094 ft · down at 1:43 PM 9:31 AM 10,456 ft · the waffle stop is the flat bit 1:43 PM · 9,094 ft
Off the tram, not recorded Down into the bowl and back up Cirque Trail to the gondola Gondola top

The real GPS track and the real elevation profile. The whole day is one shape: give away 700 feet, climb it back, eat a waffle, then hand back 1,360 more.

The file

What the watch recorded

  • 3.97 miles, 4h 12m elapsed, 1h 48m of it actually moving
  • 1,096 ft up, 1,657 ft down: net downhill, and the legs still felt it
  • High 10,456 ft, low 9,094 ft at the gondola
  • 91 TSS, scored on heart rate. TrainingPeaks wanted to call it 8.7 by pace, which is what happens when you score a 10,000-foot downhill hike like a jog

Day two at altitude

Second day off the plane and the first real effort above 10,000 feet. The Rock Springs side is the strenuous option and it went first, on fresh legs and in the clear part of the morning, which is exactly the right order in a place where the sky stacks up after two.

What the file misses

The hike started at the tram deck, but the watch didn't come on until 9:31, by which point we were already two thirds of a mile down and 640 feet below the summit. The dashed leg on the map is that first stretch drawn back in, not measured. Add it and the day is closer to 4.5 miles; everything from 9:31 onward is real data.

Day three · Tuesday, August 4

Yoga in the sky, then into the park

Sun salutations at 9,095 feet, then a paved pathway that runs eight miles from Moose to Jenny Lake with the entire Teton range shoulder-to-shoulder on the left. On e-bikes it is pure pleasure: self-paced, quiet, and about as far from a tour bus as travel gets.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

The details

  • E-bikes are allowed on all park pathways
  • Pathway is car-free the whole way; it closes dusk to dawn for wildlife
  • Carry water and sunscreen; shade is scarce in the flats
The ride file

What the day actually measured

  • Out: 12.09 mi, 12:32 to 1:41, avg 14 mph (a wrong turn east before we found north)
  • On foot: 3.81 mi around Jenny Lake, 2:38 to 4:51, only 1h 22m of it actually moving
  • Back: 7.64 mi in 24 minutes, avg 19.3 mph, top speed 26
  • Nearly 20 miles on the bikes and four on foot, and it never once felt like exercise

The missing 57 minutes

The bike track stops at the east boat dock at 1:41 and the walking track starts at 2:38 already up at the mouth of Cascade Canyon, on the far side of the lake and 200 feet above it. The watch was off for the middle. Reading between the two files, that hour is the sandwiches on the shore, the shuttle boat across, and the climb up past Hidden Falls. The walk back around the south shore is the part that got recorded.

Day four · Wednesday, August 5 · Ten years to the day

The Anniversary

August 5, 2016 to August 5, 2026. The whole day is a celebration: horses in the morning, the spa in the afternoon, dinner in town at golden hour, and a small-town rodeo under the lights to top it off. Happy anniversary, Cara.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

The one fixed day

Why it works

Horses in the morning beat the heat, the spa lands between trail dust and dinner, and the 5:00 table means we walk out of Glorietta with time to claim good rodeo seats three blocks away.

Details

  • Horses, spa, dinner, and rodeo are all reserved; the ride home is a taxi whenever we're ready
  • Bring a warm layer: the stands cool off fast after sunset (about 8:41)
  • $86 in cash for the wranglers, and the taxi numbers are on the Maps tab
Do this at the lodge

The rodeo tickets

They're Ticketmaster mobile tickets and the confirmation email is not valid for entry. Service at the fairgrounds is bad, so load both tickets into Apple Wallet before we leave for dinner, not at the gate.

Day five · Thursday, August 6

Eight miles of whitewater

Last full day, biggest adrenaline. The small boat is the one to take: an eight-person paddle raft through the Snake River Canyon where everyone works and everyone gets wet. Class III water, canyon walls, ospreys overhead.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

The details

  • Wear swimsuits and secure footwear; wetsuits and splash gear provided as needed
  • Waterproof phone pouch or leave phones behind; they sell photos
  • Rafting runs rain or shine (you're wet either way)

How the afternoon actually went

The 3:00 HydraFacial came off the books. Cara spent the afternoon in downtown Jackson instead and took her time getting back to the village; Matt rode the long way home. Everyone back at Teton Village by late afternoon, nothing on the calendar after that.

Matt's ride: up Cache Creek, then the pathway home

Off the river, lunch at Jackson Drug, then a mountain bike from Hoback Sports and out of Jackson at 2:04. The Game Creek saddle was the plan; a two o'clock start made the turnaround rule the right call. Up the singletrack above Cache Creek to 6,838 feet, turn at the four-and-a-half mile mark, back down the creek road into town, and 14 miles of pathway west and north to Teton Village. 22.35 miles, 1,880 feet of climbing, 2 hours 24 minutes door to door.

JACKSON rolling at 2:04 PM CACHE CREEK out and back, high point 6,838 ft turnaround 4.5 mi · 2:52 PM WY-22 junction, north from here · 4:00 PM TETON VILLAGE bike back at 4:28 PM, 22.35 mi
Dirt: Cache Creek, out and back Paved: town streets and pathway Start, Jackson Finish, Teton Village

The real GPS track off the ride file, not a schematic. Every wiggle in the red is what the trail actually did.

The ride file

What the Garmin recorded

  • 22.35 miles, 2:23:30 elapsed, 2:10:48 moving
  • 1,880 ft of climbing, 1,759 ft down, high point 6,838 ft
  • Average 9.2 mph, top speed 22.6 mph
  • Average heart rate 126, max 167, about 1,220 calories
  • 135 TSS at an intensity factor of 0.74, the biggest training day of the week

Plan vs. actual

The plan was 30 to 32 miles over the Game Creek saddle and down the back side, rolling at 12:15. The ride started at 2:04 instead, so the saddle came off the table and the out-and-back up Cache Creek went in: 22.35 miles instead of 32, 1,880 feet of climbing instead of 1,031. Shorter route, more vertical, home in time to shower before dinner.

The turnaround rule, used

"Not over the saddle by 2:30, turn around." At 2:30 the high point of the day was 6,838 feet with 600 more to climb and the descent still ahead, so it turned at 2:52 and came back down the creek. The one-way START pass in the rental was never needed: the pathway got it home under its own power.

Day six · Friday, August 7

Home by dinner

An early alpenglow send-off. If the sky cooperates, the Tetons turn pink right around wheels-up.

Numbered in the order we do them, so the dashed line is the shape of the day. Tap a pin for details and Google Maps directions.

Night-before checklist

  • Settle the room folio and confirm the 5:15 pickup at the desk
  • Boarding passes downloaded; JAC is small but the early bank is busy
  • Leave the swimsuits somewhere findable; they'll still be damp
The whole plan on one page
